Squid Game: The Challenge trailer teases betrayals, alliances and signature games as contestants compete for the largest $4.56 million cash prize in reality TV history

Netflix released the trailer for Squid Games: The Challenge on Friday, ahead of its November 22 launch.

The streaming platform was inspired by the popular TV show Squid Games and turned it into a reality series.

456 participants will have to compete to win a record-breaking cash prize of $4.56 million, with the return of Red Light and Yellow Light teased in the preview.

The Challenge is based on Squid Game, a South Korean survival drama series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Netflix.

It centers on a competition where 456 players, all in deep financial debt, risk their lives playing a series of deadly children’s games for a chance to win a prize of ₩45.6 billion.

While the reality TV series won’t do the same to win the cash prize, there is plenty of drama in store.

The trailer opens with the narrator saying, “Attention players. You are now competing for our largest cash prize in the history of reality shows.”

Eyes light up as the money falls into a huge piggy bank above their heads, with one player exclaiming, “You’ve got to be kidding me,” while another adds, “oh my god.”

Participants are then shown running towards the laser-targeted girl statue in Red Light Green Light, which eliminates players if they move when she turns around.

One participant then alludes to betrayal, saying, “$4.56 million dollars. People do a lot worse for a lot less.”

There will also be some new additions to games and competitors’ strategies, alliances and characters will be put to the test as competitors around them are eliminated.

The first reaction from fans was: ”This is insane, like no one has seen the show??? The whole point was about how it is inhumane to profit from watching people fight like animals over money. This is absolutely insane.’

“I can’t believe it was actually made into a TV show.”

‘Something tells me the message of Squid Game went through your heads’ (sic).

Others were excited: “Oh yeah,” “Yas yas yas.”

During production, there were complaints about poor on-set conditions from participants playing the Red Light Green Light game, which was reported back in January.

The episodes of the reality competition series were filmed earlier this year in a hot air balloon hangar in England.

A source told The Sun that some people were unable to move their feet due to freezing temperatures in Britain, before describing the scene as something like a ‘war zone’.

Variety corroborated at least some of the allegations, reporting one scenario in which help was needed and that a “small number” of participants required medical attention. One participant accidentally walked into a wall and needed help with his shoulder, and others were reportedly treated for mild ailments.

Netflix defended the new show, claiming it had “invested in proper safety procedures,” according to Deadline.

“Although it was very cold on set – and participants were prepared for this – any claims of serious injury are untrue.

Squid Game: The Challenges can be seen on Netflix from November 22.
