Spotify launches a MAJOR update that will transform the way you listen to music on your computer – here’s what you need to know

  • Spotify has given its desktop app a new makeover to empower users
  • Users can now search with filters and pin playlists to the top of their screen
  • Information on artist tour dates and merchandise is also available in the app

Spotify has launched a massive new update that could change the way you listen to songs and podcasts on a computer.

The music giant has given its desktop app an all-new makeover to give users more power when exploring and organizing content.

As of now, the app’s home page is organized into three columns, with users able to resize the “Your Library” and “Now Playing” tabs in the way that suits them.

Listeners can use search filters to browse their various playlists as well, while also pinning their favorite songs to the top of a screen.

“We’re introducing a three-column design to take full advantage of your screen and give you unprecedented control,” Spotify announced yesterday.

Spotify has given its desktop app a new makeover to give users more power in organizing and exploring their music. This is laid out in a three-column design that can also be resized

Discover your entire collection with searches, filters, and quickly return to favorites by pinning them for easy access.

“The new desktop experience is the best way to explore, listen to and manage music and podcasts on a computer or web browser.”

Within Spotify’s new design, “Your Library” is displayed on the left, giving you quick access to stored music and podcast collections.

Here, users can pin, drag and drop their songs and playlists to the top of a screen, making it even easier to find their all-time favorites.

While desktop listeners once had to search the entire Spotify catalog to find specific music, this is no longer the case.

Search filters can now be used in ‘Your Library’ to find content specific to you – customizable to search for artists, podcasts and albums.

In the right column, users will find their “Now Playing” view, which clearly shows what they are listening to.

In addition, relevant tour dates and merchandise are also displayed here, so that listeners can learn more about their favorite artists.

This view has replaced the former “Friends Activity” bar, which allows users to keep an eye on what’s going on what other people listened to.

But this is not gone for good as users can now access it by tapping the “friends” icon next to their profile picture in the top right corner.

Spotify added: “Together, the individually customizable design of these new views provides a richer experience, more context and faster access to personal favorites.”

The launch comes just months after the music giant also launched its Niche Mixes maker tool.

This tool creates personalized mixes to suit almost any mood, activity, or thing you can think of.

Five to ten of these mixes are updated daily, but the music giant also encourages users to look for other playlists – whether it’s “Angry Running” or something outlandish like “Goblincore.”

Spotify said, “If you want to get super specific, look for an activity, vibe, or aesthetic that describes the moment you’re in, and add the word ‘mix’ at the end.” Don’t be shy. Get creative. The more Mixes you’re looking for, the more music you can discover.’

SPOTIFY’S TIPS FOR USING THE NEW DESKTOP FEATURES

Go compact: In Spotify’s default mode, users will only see a view of their library. But this can be collapsed by clicking the “Your Library” option in the top right corner of the menu.

Search and filter: Prior to Spotify’s makeover, playlists could only be found by using the search bar on the desktop app. This meant that users often wade through Spotify’s entire content library in addition to the content in your personal library. Filters can now be used to browse content in the Your Library menu.

To adjust: The Your Library and Now Playing menus can both be customized to suit your needs.

Pin, drag and drop: All-time classics and favorite playlists can now be pinned to the top of Your Library in the desktop app.
