Dortmund has a large Turkish population and there were concerns that an England-Turkey clash would cause crowd problems given the history of both countries.
England’s German following includes a significant number of Leeds fans. In 2000, two Leeds fans were stabbed to death in Istanbul before a UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray.
Although the match between England and the Netherlands is considered less risky, there will still be a significant number of police officers present.

Exhibition held in former German concentration camp
Buchenwald, the concentration camp where an estimated 56,000 people died at the hands of the Nazis, is a short drive from England’s training camp at Blankenhain. To mark Germany’s hosting of the European Championships, an exhibition is being held at the camp, exploring in harrowing detail the lives of the professional footballers who were unfortunate enough to be imprisoned there.
Among them was Eugene Maes, who played for a number of clubs in Paris and scored 15 goals in 11 games for France. Maes’ career was cut short by an injury sustained in World War I and he became a swimming and dancing coach. After the German invasion, he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943 for making a joke about the swimming ability of German soldiers.
Three months later he was on his way to Buchenwald. Maes was forced to work and later transferred to a nearby extermination camp. He is believed to have died in March 1945.
