'Speeding' car that crashed into a lamppost and ended up on the sidewalk CRUSHED stroller carrying a toddler being pushed by her mother, emergency workers reveal

A mother pushing a stroller and her toddler daughter are “lucky to be alive” after narrowly avoiding being hit by a “speeding” car that crashed and ended up on the pavement, a man who rushed to help said.

Restaurant manager Liri Kingji, 33, also helped free the female driver from the wreck on Saturday after she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a lamppost in Olton near Solihull, West Midlands.

Mr Kingji said: “Both the women and the little girl are lucky to be alive. If the car had not hit the lamp post, it would have hit the mother pushing her stroller.

“She walked with her stroller straight into the path of the vehicle, which looked like it was speeding. They could have been killed. It's a miracle they all escaped with minor injuries, but they were very shocked.”

Footage of the crash shows the terrifying moment the car leaves the side of the road as the mother braces for impact and tries to move the stroller out of the way.

The vehicle crashes into a lamppost and tips over on its side, narrowly missing the 33-year-old mother and her child – but crushing the pram, a witness has now revealed.

An employee at a local shop, who did not want to be named, said: 'The pram ended up under the vehicle. We've never seen anything like this happen on the road.

'We were in the back, we didn't even see it. A customer came in and said, 'Did you see what happened?'”

Mr Kingji told how the mother, who has not been named, was hysterical and kept shouting: 'my baby, my baby, this is a bad dream.'

As members of his staff at the Italian restaurant and pizzeria L'Aragosta helped calm her, he and an employee from a store next door rushed to help the trapped driver.

The motorist, aged in her 40s, was traveling alone in her black Peugeot when she suddenly lost control as she drove past a McDonald's next to a Texaco garage.

Mr Kingji exclusively told MailOnline today how he had to free the woman by pulling her from her boot as the car had flipped over with the door facing the ground.

The store employee said one of the employees also helped the driver, whose “face was bleeding.” “She was confused and she had to get out of the trunk,” they added.

Describing the dramatic moments of rescuing the driver, Mr Kingji said: 'The car was on its side and she was trapped in the car and could not open her door.

'Me and another guy from the shop next door had to get her out through the boot. She had her seat belt on and both airbags were fully deployed.

'She was in shock and screaming and crying. She didn't say anything, just that she was out of control. We got her out of the car and paramedics who arrived on the scene checked her out. She appeared to have a head injury.'

Mr Kingji, who only came to Britain from Venice two weeks ago to help run a family restaurant, said: 'What a tragedy! It could have been so much worse. My colleagues called the police and ambulance and they arrived very quickly.'

He told how the stroller had fallen over, but the two-year-old girl inside was unharmed.

He continued, “I didn't know how many children there were or if there might be more children trapped, and I asked her, 'How many children?' and she was hysterical, but replied “Just one”. We sat her down in the restaurant, gave her something to drink and reassured her.'

Mr Kingji believes the car that crossed the road and crashed outside his restaurant was speeding at the 50km/h limit.

He said: 'It looked like the car was going very fast, about 80 to 100 kilometers per hour, when the driver lost control. I don't know what caused it or if she blacked out, but it certainly didn't look like she was driving under the influence.

'It was a terrible thing to happen, but I'm glad I could help and, most importantly, that no one was seriously injured.

'It happened after the very busy lunch service and while we were closed and getting ready for the evening service. I was sitting at the table in front of the window doing some paperwork and I saw it happen right in front of me.'

Another worker from a nearby business, who also wished to remain anonymous, added: “I don't know how they weren't killed or more seriously injured.

'The girl injured her leg and the mother was traumatised, as you can imagine. She must have acted on maternal instinct.

'How the pram ended up under the car without the child in it, while she was pushing her in it, is actually a miracle. They were just a split second away from it being much worse. The driver is also very lucky.

'We were told it was a disabled vehicle. The driver was also very shocked; it could easily have been fatal.”

Employees from nearby businesses who came to the mother and daughter's aid revealed how the stroller became trapped under the car while the girl somehow escaped.

They also told how the female driver was thrown from the boot of the vehicle by the impact, but she also suffered 'non-life-threatening injuries'.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent two ambulances to the scene. The child and the female driver of the car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and both were taken to hospital. The girl's mother was treated at the scene and taken home with non-life-threatening injuries.

An ambulance service spokesman said: 'We were called at 4.11pm on Saturday to a road traffic collision involving a car and two pedestrians on Warwick Road, Solihull. Two ambulances and an ambulance worker arrived on scene.

“Upon arrival we found a woman and child who were pedestrians and a woman who was the driver of the car. The driver of the car and the child were examined and had non-life-threatening injuries.

'The driver was treated by paramedics and both were taken to Heartlands Hospital for further assessment. A woman who was a pedestrian was investigated and suffered minor injuries.

'She was treated by paramedics, required no further treatment and was discharged at the scene.'

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police added: 'We attended a collision on Warwick Road, Olton, Solihull, where a car struck a lamppost at a zebra crossing.

'We are investigating after a car rolled over and landed on the pavement next to a woman and child in Solihull.

'The Peugeot driver, a woman in her 40s, suffered lacerations and was spoken to by officers at the scene and is assisting our investigation. The woman and child were left shaken but not physically injured.

“Our investigations are continuing and we have found footage showing the collision. No arrests have been made yet.”
