Spanish FA chief hugs World Cup winning goal-scorer Olga Carmona as the team returns to Madrid – after he was forced to apologise for kissing a player on the lips

Spain’s FA president Luis Rubiales was spotted pulling Spain’s World Cup winning goalscorer Olga Carmona into an embrace just hours after he was forced to apologize for kissing a Spanish footballer on the mouth.

Rubiales, 45, was spotted hugging the top defender as La Roja returned to Madrid on Monday night, a day after Spain’s women’s team took home the World Cup for the first time ever.

23-year-old Carmona only heard of her father’s death on Sunday after the final.

While he passed away last Friday, her family decided not to tell her so she could fully focus on the game.

Rubiales and Carmona’s embrace comes after Spain’s FA boss had to apologize for kissing player Jenni Hermoso after his country’s World Cup victory over England in Australia.

The football chief faced a flurry of criticism and dismissal requests after planting the unsolicited kiss on Jenni’s lips after the game.

In a video speech released after leading politicians told him to stop or apologize, Rubiales admitted he had made a mistake.

He started the video by saying that the Spanish team had delivered a “historic performance” and it was one of the “happiest” days for Spanish football.

But he added: “There is also something I regret and that is about something that happened between a female player and myself, who have as great a relationship as I have with other female players.

“I must have made a mistake and I must admit it.”

He continued, “In a moment of maximum excitement, without any ill intent or bad faith, what happened happened in a very spontaneous manner, I repeat, with no bad faith on either side.

“We didn’t really understand what happened next, because we saw it as something normal and natural, but it has caused controversy in some sectors and some people seem to be upset, so I have to apologize.

“Moreover, I must learn from this and understand that when someone is president of an institution as important as the Spanish Football Federation, he should be more careful in events such as ceremonies.”

Defending his initial reaction in the aftermath of the controversy, when he labeled the people who had criticized the kiss as “idiots”, admitting he was saddened that it tarnished Spain’s historic victory, he continued: “Within the Spanish Football Federation there is no one attached the slightest importance to this, but beyond that it seems that this is the case.

“I also want to apologize to those people, because if people have been affected from the outside, they will undoubtedly have their reasons.”

Rubiales made a public apology when faced with dismissal requests for his controversial post-Women’s World Cup celebrations, which included an unwanted kiss on the lips of player Jenni Hermoso.

The 45-year-old was charged overnight with committing ‘sexual assault’ by Spain’s acting Equality Minister Irene Montero over the unsolicited punch following the country’s 1-0 win against England.

He initially laughed it off as a ‘kiss on the lips between two friends celebrating’, even though 33-year-old Jenni admitted she hadn’t enjoyed it in a post-match live online stream from the locker room.

Footage then emerged of Rubiales clutching his crotch and appearing to make an obscene gesture during his wild partying in the stands next to Spain’s Queen Letizia and her 16-year-old daughter.

This morning Anna Caula, Secretary General of Sport for the regional Catalan government, said he should resign.

She called the kiss he placed on Jenni Hermoso’s lips a “harsh aggression,” adding, “We have to be aware that there are things that aren’t a price we should pay.”

“Things are still not even in football, we still have a lot of work to do.

It is up to a president of the Spanish Football Federation to be scrupulous in the way he behaves

“The explanation for this kiss and the subsequent explanations made to justify it means that we are normalizing attitudes that are not acceptable.”

Marta Lois, parliamentary spokesman for Spain’s left-wing coalition party Sumar, said: ‘This kind of sexist behavior towards Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso is intolerable.

“Mr. Rubiales must resign. It’s shocking.’

Colleague Ernest Urtasum urged Rubiales to resign, saying: ‘The image he has shown the world is one of repulsive machoism. This cannot go unpunished.’

Spanish politician Pablo Echenique, a member of the far-left Podemos party, was among those who noticed Rubiales’ crotch grab while the controversy surrounding his kiss was still raging.

He tweeted alongside video footage of the alleged obscene gesture: “Rubiales not only gave Jenni Hermoso a non-consensual kiss on the lips as he grabbed her head, an act that could constitute committing a crime, but also celebrated Spain’s victory by grabbing his. testicles next to the queen and her daughter.’

He also posted a picture of Spain’s FA president planting a sloppy kiss on the left cheek of goalscorer Olga Carmona, who learned after the match that her father had died, writing on his Twitter feed: “Here he is with Olga too Carmona.

“Looks like this guy was drooling and stalking the whole team.”

Rubiales has not yet commented on allegations that he took his genitals in front of the most important female members of the Spanish royal family.

He was filmed in the dressing room after yesterday’s World Cup final announcing a trip to Ibiza for Spain’s winning women as a prize before joking in front of Jenni Hermoso and her teammates: “In Ibiza we celebrate the wedding of Jenni and Luis Rubiales.

Hermoso admitted she didn’t like the kiss in a live online stream for fans from the locker room.

In subsequent comments facilitated by the Spanish FA, the Madrid-born footballer who currently plays for Mexican side Pachuca referred to the moment as a “mutual and totally spontaneous gesture” and insisted: “The president and I have a great relationship .’
