The southwest monsoon arrived in Mumbai two days earlier than normal on Sunday due to favorable conditions along the Maharashtra coast, an Indian Meteorological Department official said.
Normally it arrives on June 11, but last year it started on June 24 due to the ‘Biparjoy’ cyclone over the Arabian Sea, the IMD official noted. “Mumbai can expect thunderstorms accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall, with a probability of realization between 51 and 75 percent. Adjacent areas such as Raigad and Ratnagiri are more likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. A red alert has been issued for Sindhudurg and adjoining Kolhapur district, highlighting heavy to very heavy rainfall in most areas,” the IMD said. Most districts in Maharashtra, especially Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, are expected to receive heavy rainfall, it added.
