Southern California rattled by 5.2 magnitude earthquake, but there are no reports of damage

LOS ANGELES — An earthquake northwest of Los Angeles rocked much of Southern California on Tuesday evening, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 5.2 quake struck at 9:09 p.m. and had its epicenter near Mettler, an unconnected area in Kern County about 85 miles (137 kilometers) from downtown Los Angeles.

Authorities in Los Angeles and other affected communities were checking for damage to infrastructure.

The earthquake was felt at Dodger Stadium during the seventh inning of a baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies, but spectators did not noticeably react to the quake.

The Kern County Fire Department said in a social media post that firefighters in the area would be inspecting their districts.
