A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the coast of Southern California and was felt across the region – the same day as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake in Hawaii.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 9.5 miles at 1:47 p.m.
From its epicenter in the rugged Santa Monica Mountains, the quake was large enough to be felt from the coast of Malibu north to Bakersfield, south to San Diego and east to downtown Los Angeles.

An Oxnard, California man posted images of his two dogs having very different reactions to the earthquake.
His two pups were napping when the earthquake struck, causing one of them to jump up while the other stayed asleep.
Jordan Lyubenov shared security camera footage with KTL that shows the walls, windows and furniture shaking in his Playa Vista home.
‘Oh my God! It’s still going. That was the biggest we’ve had yet,” one woman said.
Jordan is heard accurately guessing the size: “That was more than 4. That was almost 5.”
The quake initially had a magnitude of 5.1, but was later downgraded to 4.6.
About 91,000 people received alerts from the MyShake app, according to California’s Office of Emergency Services.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, no significant damage was observed and no serious injuries were reported.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center reported that no tsunami had been caused.
Officials have advised residents to be prepared in case another earthquake strikes, and the USGS warned there is a 1 in 20 chance of a larger quake in the following days.
Friday marks the 53rd anniversary of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake in Southern California, which had a magnitude of 6.6. Also known as the Sylmar earthquake, it killed 64 people and caused more than $500 million in damage.
Earlier in the day, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck south of Hawaii’s Big Island, shaking buildings and causing massive tremors across the state.
The earthquake struck at an ocean depth of more than 35 kilometers, about 2.4 kilometers from the coast of Kau.
Residents of the island of Oahu – more than 200 miles (320 kilometers) from the epicenter – reported strong shaking and some damage, but it is unclear whether the quake resulted in any deaths or injuries.

“I was sitting in my truck and I thought something was wrong with my truck,” Hawaii Island community leader Ikaika Marzo told KTRE.
