West Brom started the match well, deploying a low block in an attempt to resist the hosts’ possession-based play.
Initially the plan worked, with the score at 0-0 at half-time, mirroring the scoreline from last week’s first leg at the Hawthrons.
However, Smallbone opened the scoring in the 49th minute, meaning the visitors needed to score if they were to at least take the match to extra time.
Armstrong scored his brace to take the game away from West Brom, with Cedric Kirpe’s goal standing in vain deep into stoppage time.
