Sheffield United have seen a £7 million bid for Will Smallbone, beaten back by Southampton.
The newly promoted Blades are putting together their own midfield reinforcements with Sander Berge closing in on a move to Burnley.
And Irishman Smallbone, 23, is one of the players they have attacked and talks between the clubs continue after Sheffield United saw their opening bid rejected.
Smallbone is a product of Southampton’s youth academy and was loaned out to Stoke last season.
He returned to Southampton this summer, shining in pre-season and continuing his form at their Championship opener at Sheffield Wednesday.

Smallbone impressed with his hitting range and accuracy while capturing the attention of his admirers with the amount of running he puts through during matches.
Mail Sport reported last month that Southampton were bracing for offers with Luton, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and sides in the championship eyeing Smallbone.
Smallbone still has a year left on his contract at Southampton but they are keen to show him what he has shown since returning from his loan spell.
