South Yarra train passenger rescues man standing between rail tracks

Heartbreaking moment as the Good Samaritan risks his life to save a man on the trail

  • Man standing on rails at Melbourne train station
  • Bystander jumps off platform and rescues him
  • The station staff also saw the man and had trains stopped

A heroic bystander has risked his life to save a man stranded between the rails at a busy city train station.

Shortly before 10am on Sunday, a man was spotted on the track at Melbourne’s South Yarra station, a few stops south-east of the CBD.

CCTV footage captured the barefoot man standing motionless between two railway lines, as commuters gestured frantically and shouted at him from the platforms on either side.

A man in a black T-shirt appears to be discussing the situation with a station worker before suddenly jumping off the platform onto the track.

He runs to the man standing between the rails and pulls him towards the platform.

A heroic member of the public jumped onto the rails and managed to pull the man to safety

The stranded man seems willing to go with his rescuer as he is held in a loose bear hug.

With this bit of encouragement, the man hops barefoot along the rail tracks and clambers onto the platform with a helping hand from the Metro Trains employee.

The rescuer also deftly scrambles to safety.

Metro Trains later told Channel Nine that trains approaching the station had stopped after the man was seen on the tracks.

It is not known whether the heroic rescuer knew that the trains had stopped before he bravely ran across the tracks.

Metro Trains has been contacted for comment.
