A popular South Sydney supporters group has called on Rabbitohs fans online to publicly pay tribute to the late Kyle Turner in Friday’s season-defining game against the Roosters at Accor Stadium.

Turner, 31, died suddenly last month in his hometown of Coonabarabran in northern NSW – and news of his passing rocked both the code and some of his former NRL teammates.

The 2014 premiership winner went on to make 91 First Division appearances for Souths and was remembered by the club in their recent away game against Newcastle after they took his number 15 jersey out of action.

John Sutton – who guided the Bunnies to that famous premiership and is currently a coach with the side – was tasked with bringing Turner’s top onto the pitch in emotional scenes at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The team also wore black armbands in his honor.

And now fans of ‘The Burrow’ have been asked to pay tribute to Turner in the stands of Sydney Olympic Park.

“In the 15th minute, we will be asking everyone at the game to stand and applaud in Kyle Turner’s honor,” a Facebook post read.

‘Nice request. We must show respect and love to a great rugby league person and South Sydney premiership winner,” a Rabbitohs supporter wrote in response.

Another said, “Well deserved, RIP LEGEND.”

Turner started from the bench in the side’s 2014 drought-breaking victory over the Bulldogs, the culmination of a rookie season in which he appeared in 24 games.

He represented NSW Country in the last City vs Country game in 2017 and made two appearances for the Indigenous All Stars in 2015 and 2017.

An injury hampered Turner’s time in first grade. Notably, the striker suffered a serious neck injury during the 2015 All Stars game that required him to undergo disc replacement surgery.

In 2019, Turner fell out of favor under coach Wayne Bennett, who told him to look for opportunities elsewhere from 2020 onwards.

He returned to his hometown, where he played for the Coonabarabran Unicorns and became a school teacher.
