South Mackay shooting: Woman is shot dead in front of horrified teens as shocked bystanders recall dramatic arrest of alleged gunman

Shocked witnesses recall the dramatic arrest of a man who allegedly shot a woman with two teenagers in a car before a Good Samaritan was also injured.

Emergency services were called to the Robb Place home in South Mackay in central Queensland just after 4.30pm on Wednesday after reports a woman had been shot.

Police arrived at the scene to find a 34-year-old woman dead and a 66-year-old man seriously injured with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The alleged gunman, 31, was arrested three hours later at a fast-food drive-through and gas station in the neighboring suburb of Paget.

He has been arrested and is assisting police with the investigation. No charges have been filed yet.

Harrowing new details have emerged that the woman had driven to the house when the man allegedly approached the car and fired a gun.

District Officer Chief Inspector Graeme Paine said the two teenagers fled in the vehicle and took refuge in a nearby house.

“It’s an absolutely shocking thing to have experienced,” he told reporters on Wednesday evening.

‘They were clearly very scared and started looking for help.’

He also revealed that the Good Samaritan came to the woman’s aid when the alleged gunman opened fire on him, hitting him in the “upper sternum.”

He was rushed to hospital in serious but stable condition.

It is not known what type of firearm this is.

Police issued a Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) around 5:20 p.m., closing off an area bounded by Robb Place and Paradise, Archibald, Kindermar and Denton streets.

The PSPA was still active late on Wednesday evening when police launched forensic investigations.

Chief Inspector Paine said investigators have not yet uncovered any details regarding a motive for the alleged shooting, but they are “conducting a number of different investigations.”

“There is nothing in our investigation to indicate that the parties know each other at this stage, but we do believe they live in fairly close proximity to each other,” he said.

‘We obviously don’t know exactly what happened from the time the incident took place until the time the police arrived. It is a fairly short period.’

Police cordoned off a number of crime scenes, including at Robb Place and the BP/KFC gas station where the alleged shooter’s car was located.

Technician Tyler Camilleri arrived at the gas station moments before police stormed the store and arrested the alleged shooter.

“I heard the brakes go off on one of the police cars and I thought that was a little strange, so I turned around and saw about four, five, six police cars pulling up at the same time,” he told police. Courier mail.

“They all get out and they all scream, ‘Put the gun down, you’re under arrest, stop, you know all that stuff.’

“He seemed to have put it down pretty quickly once he saw all the copper pieces.”

Mr Camilleri knew police were looking for someone after his mother called him to tell him to ‘stay away from South Mackay’.

‘And then this all happened. Mom won’t like that,” he said.

Joseph Romal, who lives in one of the closed streets, returned home at 5 p.m. but was turned away by police.

The public has been urged to avoid the exclusion zone, while residents already at home have been told to stay indoors until further notice.

Footage from the scene shows police diverting traffic as officers search the area.

Queensland Police thanked residents affected by the emergency for their “patience and understanding while this matter is ongoing”.
