A 20-year-old South Carolina college student is shot dead when he tried to enter the wrong house early in the morning

A University of South Carolina junior was shot dead when he tried to enter the wrong house on the street where he lived in the early hours of the morning.

Nicholas Anthony Donofrio, 20, was found dead on the porch of an off-campus home on South Holly Street. He died just after 2 a.m. Saturday morning from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Donofrio, who is from Madison, Connecticut, lived on the same street as the house he entered on Saturday.

He studied Kinesiology and Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina, reports the Daily voice.

Police were first sent to the scene after receiving a call about a break-in, but while they were on their way, a situation involving shooting was reported.

Police then found the 20-year-old dead on the porch.

The street where he was found is two miles from the university’s main campus.

No arrests have yet been made, but police say the investigation is ongoing.

The City of Columbia Police Department said in a statement: “Officers from the Columbia Police Department (CPD) are investigating the late-night shooting of a 20-year-old male student at the University of South Carolina from Connecticut.

“Shortly before 2am today, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of South Holly Street due to a reported residential burglary. En route, the distress call for service was upgraded to a gunfire call.

“When officers arrived on the scene, they found a dead man on the porch with a gunshot wound to the upper body.

“The Richland County coroner has identified the man as Nicholas Anthony Donofrio.

“Preliminary information indicates that Donofrio, who lived on South Holly Street, was trying to enter the wrong house when he was fatally shot.

“CPD investigators will continue to consult with the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office regarding the circumstances of the case.”

The University of South Carolina said in a statement: “Our Student Affairs team is providing resources and support to those who may be affected by this tragedy, and we remind all of our students that help is always available to them.”
