South Australian Prime Minister Peter Malinauskas spent his Saturday drinking beer and contemplating retirement as a footballer after his Adelaide University team was brutally knocked out of the final.

Playing in his fifth game of the season, Malinauskas, 43, managed to score his side’s first goal of the game, but in the end they went to Kilburn with 63 points.

“We’re done like a dinner party today,” Malinauskas said News Corp.

“Me and some other guys, we’re the fossils on the team right now, but there’s a good group of young guys coming through, so the next generation of Scum players are leaving the old fossils just like me.

“It’s a nice group of guys and it’s a relief for all of us.

The Prime Minister has made 130 appearances for the Adelaide University side affectionately known as ‘the Scum’

‘We are an eclectic group and always enjoy each other’s company. It’s just good, wholesome fun.”

In his games this season for the side affectionately known as ‘the Scum’, the Premier has scored three goals and been named one of the best players on the field once.

During his 130 games, Malinauskas scored no less than 207 goals and was named the best players 29 times.

After the game, the prime minister posted a photo of himself with a beer in the sheds.

“Good day for finals across the state. We didn’t get the chocolates in our final today so the season is over for us,” he wrote.

“At least we lost to a club from the Croydon electorate, well done Kilburn.”

When asked if opponents treat him differently on the field, the prime minister said he always gets good sleds.

“When I lined up for the goal today, some pretty funny comments came out, but that’s the nature of the beast.”

Malinauskas (pictured during an AFL match with his dad) says he uses sleds a lot when he’s playing football

The Prime Minister says this may have been his last season for Adelaide University, but he is not ruling out a new season

“When I was standing on the sidelines waiting for me to come back, given the finals and there were a few people around, some pretty good people came up to me.”

Malinauskas is acutely aware of the passage of time, but loves the sport which he says gives him much-needed stress relief.

When asked if he will go again next season, Malinauskas said: “It’s been my last year of the last four years…but it’s hard to say no when I get the chance to be there.”
