A South Australian MP has expressed shock at the word ‘menstruation’ during a speech on women’s health.
Footage from Question Time in the SA Parliament on Thursday shows Sports Minister Katrine Hildyard speaking about measures that will help girls and women feel “more confident and comfortable to take part when they have their period”.
But Government Minister Geoff Brock, who sat behind Mrs Hildyard, seemed visibly stunned to hear the word on the floor of Parliament.
After becoming startled, Mr. Brock took a quick look around the room and seemed uncomfortable with raising the matter.

Ms Hildyard continued that government funding has enabled sports clubs to buy menstrual products for women.
“So that’s been another really, really good step forward that has been really well received by girls and women in the sport,” she said.
Mr Brock, who is the independent member for the Stuart seat, declined to comment on the video when asked The advertiser.
Since 2021 free sanitary products are available in all public schools in South Australia for female students who need them.
In January, students at public schools in New South Wales gained access to free sanitary pads and tampons after the state government announced that more than 4,600 dispensers had been installed in public schools across the state.
“Periods should not be an obstacle to education,” Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said at the time.
