Soulframe, a Warframe successor with huge Elden Ring vibes, opens up to more players
Digital Extremes unveiled for the first time Soul Frame at TennoCon 2022, the annual convention created to celebrate the free-to-play online game Warframe. Soul Frame looks to be a much slower-paced game than its sci-fi sibling, and a new preview at TennoCon 2024 gave us a closer look at its combat, progression, and customization options. Soul Frame is still in a relatively early stage of development, but a long lead-in will likely work well for the fantasy adventure game.
Soulframe Preludes is a sort of early access version of the game, and Digital Extremes is inviting waves of new players in groups. The protagonist is the Envoy, a baby who washed ashore on the northern island of Midrath after a fierce battle endangered their family. In the digital preview from TennoCon, we got to see the circumstances that lead up to the Envoy’s journey, complete with an appearance from their mother that we can customize with an epic song.
Cut to a grown-up Envoy, years later, who can fight legendary figures like Nimrod. The Envoy can switch between an open world filled with ruins, foliage, and wonders, and a sort of mind palace called the Nighthold. When the player pauses, they drop into the Nighthold, a mystical realm inhabited by their ancestors. These helpful ancestors can upgrade gear, brew elixirs, and craft weapons.
The Soul Frame team did a developer stream for the game at TennoCon, where they shared a lot of new information about what players can expect. It definitely feels like Warframe And Old Ring fell in a The fly-style cloning machine, and as a fan of both games my interest is certainly piqued. At TennoCon we got a glimpse of Verminia, a rat queen with a passion for fashion. Verminia is a new Ancestor that players can meet and bring back to the Nighthold, and she will help the Envoy dress the doll.
However, Soul Frame is designed to be updated over the years, just like its older sister Warframe. Soulframe Preludes is still in the very early stages of development, and we will likely see the world continue to grow and evolve. For now, Digital Extremes is not ready to allow every player to Soul Frame‘s new systems a spin. However, they invite waves of new players over time.
Players can sign up to take a test if necessary Soulframe Preludes on the game’s official site.
We learned about Soul Frame two years ago, but the game is much more clear with these new updates. While Warframe still has plenty of fuel left in the tank, I’m curious to see how Digital Extremes will put this new spin on its successful core formula. Soul Frame is currently only available on PC, but we’ll likely see the game roll out to more platforms as it progresses into Early Access.
