Sorry, AirPods Pro 2’s coolest feature isn’t coming to the originals after all

Bad news, Apple fans: It looks like the original AirPods Pro earbuds aren’t getting a free feature upgrade after all thanks to their new sibling.
Apple AirPods Pro (2019) and AirPods Max users who tested the iOS 16.1 beta reported seeing Adaptive Transparency Mode — a feature introduced on the new AirPods Pro 2 — in the settings of their first-generation devices. appear, but Bloomberg’s Apple insider, Mark Gurman, has now poured cold water on the excitement.
“I was told this is a bug,” says Gurman tweeted (opens in new tab) in light of the reports, adding that the feature “isn’t meant to work” when asked to clarify the nature of the hiccups.
Adaptive Transparency is an extension of the AirPods Pro’s original Transparency mode that allows the AirPods Pro 2 to mute loud sounds – sirens, construction noise, and more – without blocking out all the noise, thanks to the new H2 chip and more advanced earbud design.
AirPods Pro and AirPods Max users reported seeing the upgraded feature replace their device’s original Transparency mode after downloading the third iOS 16.1 beta, but Gurman has now dispelled hopes that Apple was planning to introduce Adaptive Transparency. expandable to all AirPods Pro generations.
In reality, the revelation comes as no surprise. It seemed unlikely that the H1 chip in the original AirPods Pro could support Adaptive Transparency, which was supposedly introduced on the AirPods Pro 2. because his new H2 chip offered just as much.
So, in all likelihood, the switch to activate the feature appeared for these devices by accident. In practice, Adaptive Transparency has never really worked on these devices – although some users disagree on the extent to which it did or didn’t work:
They can and it really works. I tested it with my AirPods Pro and several other users report that it works for them too.October 3, 2022
According to Gurman, Apple’s official line is that Adaptive Transparency is “not meant to work” on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, suggesting that some further research should be done to determine whether these older products are indeed capable of to use the function.
The Transparency Mode that: is doing officially exist on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max works in much the same way to let in outside noises, albeit without the ability to automatically mute particularly loud sounds (those above 85db).
Many have found the AirPods Pro 2’s Adaptive Transparency Mode to be one of its best features: TechRadar’s Senior Editor for Audio, Matt Bolton, wasn’t a fan of how the original AirPods Pro handled Transparency Mode, and wrote a guide on how to do it. this has resolved. it – but he loves the mode in AirPods Pro 2 out of the box.
