Sopranos star Michael Imperioli lifts the lid on future plans for a reboot of the hit HBO show – as he reveals his own ‘fascinating’ idea for Christopher Moltisanti spin-off

Sopranos star Michael Imperioli has dismissed any chance of a reboot of the iconic HBO series. However, he does believe there is potential to explore his character Christopher Moltisanti in a spin-off.

The series, which first aired in 1999, followed Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), a mobster trying to balance his duties as head of the Soprano crime family with his real family.

After the acclaimed drama wrapped its sixth season, series creator David Price expanded the story into a feature film with The Many Saints of Newark, which focused on Tony’s childhood.

In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com, Imperioli (58) admitted he would like to see a similar exploration of his character’s upbringing, as he was “a baby” on the project.

“When I saw it, I thought about many saints: Why did Christopher become like this, because he had no father?” he began.

I thought [his father] Dickie Moltisanti was a very interesting character. He was a gangster, but he could have been a very good father.

“Maybe Christopher would have been different if he had had that influence in his life. Watching him grow up could be really fascinating.”

The actor – who produced the new documentary series, American Godfathers: The Five Families – starred in all six seasons of this hit series and also helped write five episodes of the show.

While fans are still eager for a return to the world of the Soprano family, Michael insists there are no plans for that at this time.

“I haven’t heard any stories or rumors about a new Soprano project,” he said, adding, “Unfortunately.”

The Sopranos premiered on January 10, 1999 and was seen by many as the beginning of a new “Golden Age” of television.

Other actors in the series included Lorraine Bracco as Tony’s therapist Jennifer Melfi, Drea De Matteo as Adriana La Cerva and Steven Van Zandt as Silvio Dante.

The hit series won 21 Emmys, including two for Outstanding Drama Series, for which the series was nominated each season.

It was also the first cable series ever to be nominated for Best Drama Series and was named the best TV show of all time by Rolling Stone and TV Guide, among others.

Imperioli has long been known for his role in the drama and his role as Spider in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, but he also recently enjoyed success in the second season of The White Lotus.

He played the role of Dominic Di Grasso, a Hollywood producer who is on a family trip to Italy with his son and father.

And his celebrated performance earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 2023 Emmys.

However, he confirmed that he would no longer sign up for the third season, which is being filmed in Thailand.

“I hope there’s a season where I can come back somewhere,” the actor said. “I was hoping it would be season three, but that didn’t happen.”

The Basketball Diaries star expressed his excitement to join fans in seeing what happens with the new batch of characters, continuing, “One of my favorite actors, Parker Posey, is in it. Yeah, she’s amazing. I think that’s a great White Lotus. I’m sure it’s going to be amazing.”

He said he was surprised by the impact his role in The White Lotus had on his fans, admitting that he now seems to be popular with a “younger generation.”

“I’m being approached by a younger audience,” the star mused. “The White Lotus fandom for me is mostly female, but a younger generation.”

Expressing his delight at the matter, he continued, “It’s very exciting, especially because it’s something I really loved and the material was very rich and fun and exciting and strange and all those things.”

Now the star has returned somewhat to his TV roots, after serving as executive producer and narrator on American Godfathers: The Five Families.

This three-part, six-hour documentary series explores the origins, rise and fall of New York City’s five Mafia families. Over a period of more than 50 years, they were involved in every facet of organized crime in America, from bootlegging and drug trafficking to extortion and gambling.

The investigation is based on the best-selling book Five Families: The Rise, Decline and Resurgence of America’s Most Powerful Mafia Empires by Selwyn Raab. It also uses archive footage, film footage, audio recordings and reconstructions to give viewers an insight into the inner workings of the most powerful criminal organization of the twentieth century.

American Godfathers: The Five Families continues tonight, August 8, at 8:00 p.m. ET on The History Channel
