Sophie Trudeau on shock split from Canadian PM in new memoir: From eating disorder struggles as a teen to VERY personal anecdotes about now-ex-husband

The former wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has opened up about the couple’s shocking split in a candid interview and revealed what she plans to do next.

In her latest book, written before their divorce, Sophie Trudeau, 48, discussed her battle with an eating disorder while sharing personal anecdotes from her “imperfect” marriage to Justin.

Since the end of her 18-year marriage to Justin in August 2023, Sophie now immerses herself in a busy schedule, including promoting her book, organizing yoga sessions and continuing her advocacy for mental wellbeing.

Speaking about her divorce from Justin, she shared The times: ‘We don’t need to dramatize, end abruptly, sever relationships to restructure our lives and minds.

‘And something changed, yes, something broke; “I’m not sure I mean it that way,” she added, emphasizing that she and Justin remain a close family despite the divorce.

She declined to comment on her relationship with the Ottawa pediatric surgeon, with whom she appeared to be falling in love before her divorce was announced.

Sophie now lives not far from her ex-husband while caring for their three young children: Xavier, 16, Ella-Grace, 15, and Hadrien, 10.

“We all still hang out: we love each other, we spend time together. It’s organic – you know, the kids all sleep together one night, that’s fine.

“And I have a little space to myself and sometimes the kids come there, and we’re just so close together that we do it organically. And it feels good, it feels natural. It doesn’t feel forced. It feels heartwarming,” she told the Times.

Reports suggested that by the time the Justins’ decision to split was announced to the world, Sophie had already begun a relationship with Ottawa-based pediatric surgeon Dr. Marcos Bettolli.

But in the latest interview, she did not address the rumors and added that there are no secrets between her and Justin.

“You know, in some ways it’s boring for some people because we’ve always been honest with each other. We have no secrets. That’s not the dynamic we have.

“And let me be honest: In some ways, I’m very proud of how we—and not how the world thinks about us—are navigating this. When we are together and look at each other, that’s what counts.’

“Although we are no longer a couple, I know our shared sense of humor will always help us weather the storms.”

But she didn’t hesitate to share some deeply personal experiences in her new book Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves Loving Each Other, which offers readers a glimpse into her 18-year marriage to Justin.

For example, Sophie shared an “attachment styles” form she completed prior to the divorce.

She checked the box and said that she “often fears” that her partner will not love her anymore and that she is “afraid” that her partner will become interested in someone else.

She also admitted that she would “get attached to a romantic partner very quickly” and expressed a wish that her partner would show “a little bit of jealousy” after a breakup.

When Sophie was Canada’s first lady, she had some memorable encounters with world leaders, including those who “have a wicked sense of humor.”

“There are good people there,” she said.

Speaking about former first lady Michelle Obama, Sophie said: ‘She’s funny. She has a great sense of humor and also very deep values ​​that I respect.”

But when asked about her relationship with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, she was very reserved, saying: “I know her… but we haven’t spent much time together.”

Sophie then turned the conversation to Meghan’s sister-in-law Kate Middleton and revealed her “heart just sank” when she heard about the princess’ cancer diagnosis last month.

Sophie said she now lives a fairly normal life in Ottawa, focusing on yoga, therapy and meditation while raising her three children.

“First of all, no life is perfect. People can have a perception of someone’s life and we have to be very careful about the way we think we know public figures,” she said.

‘And I don’t see myself as a public personality, just that there is a public aspect to my life. But I’m not raising my children in the spotlight.

‘We go to the park and I walk in my sweatpants, we go shopping and we roll in the grass. And that’s my life. Then there is a small piece that is quite unique.’

In February, she was pictured having dinner with Dr. Bettolli and her children. Reports have now surfaced about their relationship.

In a divorce petition filed on April 26, 2023, Dr. Bettolli’s ex-wife Ana Remonda that he had “re-partnered with a high-profile individual who attracts significant media attention and poses significant security concerns.”

The person was not named in court documents, but The National Post claimed it had been confirmed that Ms Remonda’s claim relates to 48-year-old Gregoire.

Dr. Bettolli, 48, works at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and also teaches at the University of Ottawa’s medical school.

He completed his medical studies at the Catholic University of Cordoba, Argentina, according to his University of Ottawa biography website.

The doctor moved to Canada in 2004 before becoming educational leader for the university’s Pediatric Surgery undergraduate program in 2010.

In 2014, he was promoted to Associate Professor and received his distinction as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC).

His ex-wife Mrs Remonda, a stay-at-home mother, reportedly said in her divorce petition that she takes ‘no position’ on her ex-partner’s personal life.

But Dr. Bettolli emphasized in his response to the divorce claim that his ex-wife’s attitude towards his relationship with Sophie “is not in the best interests of the children.”

He is said to have alleged that Ms Remonda threatened to return to Argentina, where they were both born, if the new relationship was exposed.

Dr. Bettolli and his ex-wife separated in January 2020 after 22 years of marriage.
