Sophie Ellis Bextor joins her mother Janet Ellis at Brokeback Mountain premiere

Sophie Ellis Bextor was enjoying a family night out with her mother Janet Ellis when they attended the premiere of the stage adaptation of Brokeback Mountain.

The Murder On The Dancefloor hitmaker, 44, was a stylish figure in a fun black floral dress as she posed alongside her mum, 67, a former Blue Peter presenter.

Sophie paired her dress with a simple black blazer as she posed next to her mother at the premiere of the play, at London’s newest theater Soho Place.

The play stars Mike Faist as Jack and Lucas Hedges as Ennis in the stage adaptation of Annie Proulx’s story about the male lovers.

It is set to run for a 12-week season from May 10 to August 12.

Janet appeared on Steph’s packed lunch and said, “It works the other way around for me, I’m Sophie’s mom!”

‘Certainly in Sophie’s case that didn’t apply because what she does is so different.

“When she first started out as a singer, and she was only 18, and people were saying to me ‘oh that’s great, she’s doing something you can understand’, I was like, ‘I don’t know the music industry at all.’

“In the beginning there was probably a little bit of true, you know, she was my daughter, but oh my god, the tables have turned.”

The term “fake babies” was coined online and is used to describe celebrities who easily enter the world of showbiz, caught by their parents’ famous names.

Lily-Rose Depp, Maude Apatow, and a slew of others were among those plastered on the front cover of New York Magazine’s The Year of the Nepo Baby.

Speaking about whether Sophie had to work harder because of having a famous mother, Janet replied: “Maybe, as I said, because she was doing something so different I think people would have just thought, ‘you’re not a presenter'”.

“If you get into the same business, I’m sure you will. I guess it’s a curse and a blessing, right?

“Because it gets you there, people are interested and that’s flattering and if they like what your parent or relative did, then obviously they’re going to want to jump on that bandwagon and at the end you just have to be yourself.”

After the interview, Sophie took to Instagram to share an independent news article that read, “Blue Peter legend Janet Ellis denies daughter Sophie Ellis-Bexter is a ‘fake baby’

She responded by writing, “Actually, I am 100% a fake baby. If you search the pockets of everyone I’ve worked with, you’ll find the blue godfather badge I gave them to bribe them. Mwah-ha-ha’.
