Sony plans live-action Horizon and Helldivers films
Sony seems determined to turn every PlayStation game in its library into a movie or TV show – and the company has continued that initiative by announcing that it is developing live-action films based on Horizon zero dawn And Hell divers 2.
The news was shared by Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions Sony’s press conference at CES in Las Vegas late Monday. Both films are still in the early stages of development with no talent attached yet – at least not that Sony was willing to reveal.
Last year’s surprising hit Hell divers 2 is an online co-op shooter where players take on the role of armored space commandos battling hordes of insects and robots. Any film adaptation will have to deal with the enormous and obvious debt the setting owes to Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 satirical action masterpiece, Spaceship Troopers. Qizilbash said PlayStation Productions collaborated with Sony Pictures on the adaptation.
Horizon zero dawnthe open-world adventure game that pits post-apocalyptic tribal hunter Aloy against giant robot animals sounds like it’s meant to be a major movie project. Qizilbash said PlayStation Productions developed the film in collaboration with Sony Pictures’ flagship Columbia Pictures, which has already released films based on Gran Turismo And Not mapped. “Imagine Aloy’s beloved origin story, set in a vibrant far future full of gigantic machines, brought to the big screen for the first time,” Qizilbash teased.
