It looks like Sony has started making changes to the PlayStation 5 packaging by removing the 8K label.
This is from a recent one Reddit post (via Flat panel HD) where user ‘Roklobster1’ shared a photo of the updated box art for the console and said: “Sony has taken the claims that PS5 could do ‘8k’ out of their packaging.”
Compared to the launch version, which includes 8K, 4K 120 and HDR, the latest version is notably the “8K” logo. It’s also worth noting that the PS5 Slim, which was released in late 2023, also carries the 8K label. You can view the images below.
In the original of the console FAQ posted in November 2020, it stated that the “PS5 will be compatible with 8K displays at launch.”
Sony also promised that the PS5 would be able to output resolutions up to 8K “after a future system software update” when content is available, with supported software.
Sony has debunked claims that the PS5 could do “8k” out of the box by r/gamingnews
While the console supports 8K rendering for certain games, it is downscaled to 4K resolution at 60fps for output via HDMI 2.1.
Nearly four years after the PS5’s release, the promise of 8K output resolutions has not been delivered, suggesting the reasoning behind the latest box art update.
Sony has not commented on the recent changes.
Over the past few months we’ve been hearing rumors about the PlayStation 5 Pro. While Sony hasn’t announced its next big console yet, recent reports suggest the Pro will arrive soon, and there will also be a substantial mid-generation jump that will be “45% faster” than the original PS5.
At this time, it’s unclear whether Sony plans to offer 8K for the PS5 Pro.
Elsewhere, Sony has revealed that the PS5 is officially its most profitable console generation to date, but more than a decade into its life cycle, the PlayStation 4 still dominates and now makes up half of its player base.
