Sony ending support for Dreams in September
Media Molecule, the Sony developer of To dreamannounced that it will end live service support for the PlayStation 4 game creation system in September as it focuses on another project.
“We have made the difficult decision to discontinue live support for Dreams after September 1, 2023 to shift our focus to an exciting new project,” the studio said. in a blog post.
The title will not be withdrawn from sale and players will still be able to create, share and play in it To dream, but there won’t be any more updates or developer-led events like the Impy Awards that rewarded the community’s best creations. The long-promised multiplayer support is not coming and the game will not be updated for PlayStation 5 or PlayStation VR 2.
To dream will also migrate to a new server at the end of May, after which players will encounter a 5 GB storage limit for new creations “in an effort to improve the security and stability of the To dream server for all players.” Existing creations uploaded before the move will not count towards this limit. A number of other features will be removed from the game, including Twitch integration.
Media Molecule promised it would continue to highlight the best in the community To dream creations on its social channels, and to surface creations through in-game curation even after the live service has ended.
In an FAQ, the studio suggested that To dream hadn’t been successful enough to continue working on in the future, even though the developers would have loved to. “While we have always had the desire to build on the foundation of To dream and expand the experience, when reviewing our plans we were unable to define a sustainable path, “it said. It also confirmed that its new project is not Dreaming 2 or related to the To dream I P.
“We know this won’t be an easy message for everyone to hear, and it certainly hasn’t been an easy decision — To dream has been a special project for Media Molecule and it remains one of the best things we’ve ever done to help this fast-growing community of game developers, tinkers, creatives, collaborators and dreamers grow and express themselves. “Thank you for being a part of it with us – we look forward to joining us on our next adventure.”
