Sonny Bill Williams calls Eddie Jones ‘full of crap’ for taking Japan rugby job after repeatedly denying he was in the running: ‘What a disgrace’

  • Followed by repeated denials that he had been interviewed

Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones has been branded a 'disgrace' by Sonny Bill Williams after he was confirmed as Japan's new coach after repeatedly denying he was even in the running.

The World Cup-winning former All Black and NRL star launched a scathing attack on Jones, stating that he denied his ties to the job so often while in charge of the Wallabies that he had “shown that he is not with' things like trust and loyalty.

Former England player Andy Goode was equally blunt with Jones, who was sacked as England coach before taking charge of the Wallabies, declaring on social media platform X that he was 'a man you can never trust!!'

Having previously clashed with Jones when revelations first emerged that he had interviewed for the Japan role ahead of the Wallabies' World Cup campaign, Williams went even further following confirmation that Jones had secured the role.

'What a shame. I guess that's my first point,” Williams said.

'Second point would be: I feel sorry for Japan. His track record speaks for itself. I'm a big believer in the proof being in the pudding, and what is his proof? His evidence is that he has been discharged from England in recent years. He burned a lot of bridges.

“I actually feel sorry for Japan because they think this guy is going to take them somewhere where his track record shows he hasn't been able to do that. It seems like he's a little out of touch with what's going on.

'I guess I'm just speaking from an ex-player's point of view. I could never believe in someone I knew was pretty much full of bullshit. Japanese culture is built entirely on respect, loyalty, things he has shown he is not capable of.

“If it hadn't been for the captain's call, the great captain's call, he might not even have had a job before the disastrous World Cup in Australia.”

After criticizing Jones' integrity, Williams said he feels 'sorry' for Japan because the ex-Wallabies coach (pictured in 2105) is 'out of touch' and won't deliver results

Williams said Australian rugby would be better off without Jones.

“My final point, from an Australian rugby point of view, would be a point of gratitude because we are moving, we can move in the right direction,” Williams told the Wide World of Sports.

“Does he owe Rugby Australia, the public, an apology? I would say they should thank him because he is gone and hopefully things can change.”

Jones is expected to chair a media conference in Japan on Thursday.
