Formula 1 champion James Hunt’s son Freddie has criticized Australian actor Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of his father in the biopic Rush.

Chris played James in the 2013 movie about the rivalry between the racing driver and Niki Lauda.

Freddie told the Pitstop podcasthe was not impressed with how the actor portrayed his father in the film.

“I don’t know if I should be mad at Chris or [film director] Ron Howard, because he actually played dad like he ate,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’s because of his bad acting or if he was ordered to play that way.”

Freddie continued: ‘Daniel Brûhl who played Niki has delivered an absolute masterpiece.’

“He actually asked Niki if he could spend some time with him so he could learn his mannerisms and really get to know him.”

The film depicts the story of the 1976 Formula 1 season.

James won the world title from Niki by just one point after a controversial campaign in which Niki nearly crashed after his Ferrari burst into a fireball at the Nürburgring.

Miraculously, Niki, who was influential in convincing Lewis Hamilton to join Mercedes, returned to the cockpit after missing just two races, only missing out on retaining his title.

The film also explores the personal lives of both drivers, including James’ failed marriage to supermodel Suzy Miller.

“I don't know if I should be mad at Chris or [film director] Ron Howard because he basically played dad like an asshole,” Freddie said
