Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has spoken out about his miss in the final stages of the defeat to Man City as he urged fans to get behind Ange Postecoglou.

The north London side suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday evening and Postecoglou delivered a scathing assessment of the Spurs fans, many of whom were hoping Pep Guardiola’s side would claim victory to prevent Arsenal from winning the title .

The defeat ended their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season but ensured City would win the title ahead of the Gunners if they beat West Ham on Sunday.

Speaking about his missed opportunity – when he shot straight at Stefan Ortega as he scored late on – Son said Evening standard: ‘I am also human. The goalkeeper made a very good decision and made himself very great.

“But I take responsibility for not scoring that big chance for the team because the team worked very hard and tried to get a good result.”

Son is confident Postecoglou is the man to lead Tottenham to victory despite their latest setback and has called for greater unity at the club.

The forward said: “We have to understand that this is the gaffer’s first year and he brought with him so much positivity and different football.”

“I know it’s early to say that, but we have to do so much better next season because I still believe he can bring so much success to the club.

‘I’m all in. I like the way he wants to play. It’s the first time I’ve experienced it.

“Everyone – the club, the players, the fans too – everyone has to step up because we all have to be in this together. He has certainly shown that he can bring success to the club.’

Postecoglou suggested Spurs need a major change in mentality if they are to close the gap between themselves and the country’s elite after the defeat to City.

He believes the build-up to City’s visit, the rivalry with Arsenal dominating thoughts around the club, has shone a light on the problems he faces as a manager.

Outraged by the attitude towards the match, with some Spurs fans openly saying they hoped their own team would lose to prevent Arsenal from claiming a first title in 20 years.

“The last 48 hours have shown that the foundations are quite fragile,” Postecoglou said.

”It just means I have to go back to the drawing board on some things. It’s outside (the club), inside, everywhere. It was an interesting exercise.’

At one point in the match, Postecoglou appeared to exchange words with a supporter from his technical environment.

Son insists he and his teammates did their best, saying: “As players we all wanted to do our best for the club and for us [against City].

‘We weren’t really interested in the rest. We just focused on what’s best for us, for the team.

‘The players, the staff who have had so many sessions, so many matches, so much travel, we just wanted to do the best for them. We didn’t want to do anything else.’
