Society of the Snow is a hit on Netflix – here are 5 more real survival thrillers to watch

When Netflix first dropped the trailer Association of the Snow last November we were immediately captivated by the breathtaking scenery of the Andes Mountains, and it looks like we weren’t the only ones. The survival thriller has become an instant hit on the top streaming service, with more than 28 million views since its release on January 4.

It has become the most-watched non-English language film on Netflix this week and has been in the top 10 for two weeks in a row. It is the terrifying true story of the infamous Uruguayan Air Force plane crash on Flight 571 that occurred in late 1972 and which also inspired the 1993 film. Empathize and Showtime Series 2021 Yellow jackets.

Association of the Snow seems to be a huge success with critics and audiences alike, and is certainly one of the best Netflix films in recent times – it has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90% and an audience rating of 83%. If you haven’t seen it yet, we highly recommend you give it a try. But for those who have, here are five more incredible survival thrillers that are also true stories.

The impossible

Released in 2012, The impossible is based on a true story about the Belon-Alvarez family who were vacationing in Thailand in 2004 when a massive underwater earthquake caused a tsunami that hit their resort. The disaster killed an estimated 225,000 people, but there were survivors, including the Belon-Alvarez family, who were able to reunite after being separated by the devastating wall of water. With Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland, The impossible is such a raw depiction of the harrowing event that even one survivor called it “beautifully accurate.” The guard.

Sole survivor

Based on the book of the same name by Marcus Luttrell, Sole survivor tells the true story of a US Navy SEAL trying to survive in Afghanistan after a firefight against the Taliban. Unfortunately, of the four Navy SEALs who took part in the covert operation in 2005, only one survives. Mark Wahlberg plays the survivor Luttrell alongside Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch and Ben Foster in the film, which – while not very highly regarded among critics – received two Academy Award nominations.

True spirit

There are plenty of films and documentaries that describe a sailor’s journey around the world, but… True spirit is notable for the fact that the person who attempted such a feat was only 16 years old at that time. Her name is Jessica Watson, and although technicalities surrounding the distance prevented her from officially becoming the youngest solo circumnavigator in the world – Laura Dekker still holds that title – she was still awarded the Order of Australia Medal. Although the film does not receive rave reviews, it is still an incredible true story about surviving on your own.

Apollo 13

This film is a dramatized portrayal of the events of the Apollo 13 mission to the moon, with Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton playing the three astronauts (Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert) who manned the Saturn V rocket. After an oxygen tank exploded, the group was forced to abandon the mission and instead circle the moon to return home safely, without enough air or power to complete the mission. The excitement of the people at NASA working to figure out ways to make it work, with the astronauts trying to follow suit in impossible circumstances, is at the heart of this film. With a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 96%, the film does every bit of the story justice and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche

Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche was released 40 years after the real life events took place, but feels just as raw as if it had happened today. It is a documentary that tells the story of the search for eight missing people tragically buried by an avalanche that struck the Alpine Meadows Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, California, using archival footage interwoven with interviews with the rescuers and survivors . Although this documentary hasn’t received many reviews yet, it currently has an impeccable score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising how well made it is.
