Socceroos young gun Garang Kuol watches new club Newcastle United take on Arsenal

Young Socceroos player Garang Kuol wastes no time getting acquainted with his new club Newcastle as he watches the Premier League giants take on Arsenal just after landing in the UK.

  • Garang Kuol was at the Emirates Stadium watching Newcastle play Arsenal
  • The 18-year-old former A-League striker has signed a multi-year deal with the Magpies.
  • After excelling at the Socceroos World Cup, he was granted a UK work permit

Garang Kuol’s elite football journey at club level has begun, watching his high-flying teammates Newcastle United take on Arsenal in the English Premier League.

While the clash at the Emirates Stadium ended goalless on Tuesday night local time, the Socceroos’ young gun, 18, would have quickly seen the standard required if he is to succeed abroad.

The teenager took to Instagram to prove he was a bystander in London as the Gunners extended their EPL lead to eight points ahead of Manchester City.

Kuol flew from Australia buoyed by the news that he had won a coveted UK work permit, which will likely mean he won’t have to go on loan to countries like Portugal or France.

With Eddie Howe’s men standing out in third place after 18 games, and losing just once this season, the former Central Coast Mariners striker faces a tough task to break into the first team straight away.

The work permit will see Kuol on loan in England, with a Championship (second tier) club a likely destination.

His flashy World Cup performances in Qatar for Australia saw Kuol’s paperwork sealed, and where he ends up next is the question many soccer fans want to know.

Kuol signed a multi-year contract with the Magpies in September, and Howe recently stated that the striker will be sent from St James’ Park to speed up his development.

“It’s a possibility (Garang could train with us),” he told reporters.

But I do believe that for player development, you need to go and play.

If possible, let it be at a very good level, with a good club and a good coach.

“That’s not a decision that has been made currently, so we’ll have to look at all of our options.”

Mariners manager Nick Montgomery, who played in the EPL with Sheffield United at the peak of his career, is confident the rising youngster will shine in Europe.

“He (Kuol) is still a kid – he started three games for us and it will be a shock for him physically and in terms of pressure when he gets there,” Montgomery told FTBL.

“Hopefully they (Newcastle) find a club that suits him, I’m sure they will.” He just needs to keep playing now and have a lot of football under his belt.

“Time will tell for Garang – he has all the potential and now ultimately it’s up to him what happens next.” He is at a great club and that is of vital importance for his development.

Kuol played his youth soccer for the Goulburn Valley Suns in Victoria before being signed by the Mariners in January 2021.

Socceroos boss Graham Arnold named Kuol as a ‘bolter’ for his 26-man squad in the Middle East, and the electric youngster saw a last-minute shot saved against Argentina that would have sent the round of 16 clash to the extension
