Australia’s World Cup run came to an end on Sunday after the Socceroos lost 2-1 to Argentina.

A couple of costly errors by Aziz Behich and goalkeeper Mat Ryan were the crucial moments that put the Socceroos within two goals of the South American giant.

Graham Arnold’s men put in an outstanding performance and were dangerous until the final minutes in their first World Cup knockout game since 2006.

The result caps off an incredible tournament for the Australians and emotions ran high after the match.

‘Your tenacious nature is something to be admired. A calm and unassuming leader. My favorite human,’ Nicola wrote.

Jackson Irvine struggled to maintain his composure in a post-match interview with SBS.

‘Yes, we gave it our all. Just like we have every minute of this competition. Very proud of all the players and staff. Yes, but not enough in the day,” Irvine said.

“I think we did everything we could. We rise to be compact and disciplined in our form. Defensively we were excellent, we gave up very little until the end, obviously. You have to try with the last 15 minutes.

When the midfielder was asked about the Socceroos’ impact in putting Australian rules football back on the map, Irvine was overjoyed.

‘It’s hard to comprehend everything right now. It’s all pretty raw,’ Irvine said as she fought back tears.

“But yeah, I hope we made everyone proud.”

Irvine then put his face in his hands and walked away from the interview.

Aaron’s teammate’s girlfriend Nathaniel Atkinson also shared a touching tribute to her boyfriend on Instagram.
