Socceroos and Melbourne City star Jordan Bos sets Aussie football record with $2 million move to Europe

  • Jordan Bos of Melbourne City will soon play in Belgium
  • The 20-year-old wingback secured a transfer to KVC Westerlo
  • A $2 million fee is a transfer record for A-League men
  • Bos also recently made his Socceroos debut

Melbourne City sensation Jordan Bos has sealed a transfer to Belgian Pro League club KVC Westerlo for $2 million, setting an A-League Men transfer record.

Bos, a breakout star who also made his Socceroos debut against Ecuador this year, will be leaving for Europe after City’s finals campaign comes to an end.

The transfer surpasses the $1.4 million that parent club Manchester City paid to get Aaron Mooy out.

Bos called the ability to make minutes on the field a priority when choosing Westerlo from a wave of offers.

“The Belgian league suits me and is a good stepping stone to get my face in Europe,” he said.

‘Westerlo gives me that chance in a good team, in a good competition.

‘That’s where I have the best chance of success.’

He also took sage advice from Socceroo’s teammates who have walked the path before him.

“Don’t look at the salary, but look at your availability and how you fit into that team, because if you go too big somewhere, you can get lost there,” Bos told players.

Bos made his ALM debut last season, making 13 appearances, but started in 2022/23, starting 26 games, scoring two goals and driving skipper Scott Jamieson out of City’s starting eleven.

“Born and raised in Melbourne, Jordan is a product of our City youth academy,” City football boss Michael Petrillo said in a statement.

“His natural ability was evident from the start and it has been a privilege to watch him grow into the elite player he is today.”

Bos is a marauding left-back with speed, trickery and strong technical ability. He is solid defensively but also capable of making offensive runs.

And that talent on the field caught the attention of the Belgian club.

“They want me to do what I do here[at Melbourne City],” he said.

The 20-year-old Melburnian has been at City since joining the club’s academy in 2016, scoring three goals and assisting five others in 50 appearances in all competitions.

He has been involved in successive ALM premierships and will aim to win his first championship this year.

Bos follows Nathaniel Atkinson and Connor Metcalfe as they progress through City’s academy before moving abroad.

“We are incredibly proud of our track record of developing young Australian talent, and we are committed to continuing to strengthen the path we provide for the next generation of stars to reach their full potential,” said City Football Group director of football Brian Marwood.

“The transfer fee for Jordan is a record for any Australian club and is a testament to his talent and the strength of our academy programme.”

City are also expected to lose other talented young talents Marco Tilio and Tom Glover to European moves at the end of the season.

They sit 1-1 with Sydney FC ahead of their semi-final second leg at AAMI Park on Friday night, with the winner advancing to the Grand Final.
