Football legend Fernando Torres made a bizarre surprise appearance at the NFL Draft, announcing a sixth-round draft pick for the Miami Dolphins.
Torres was seen on screen with the Metropolitano Stadium in the background, home of Atletico Madrid, where he currently coaches.
The former Chelsea and Liverpool striker started speaking in Spanish to start his performance, but switched back to English to announce the choice.
Torres announced former Virginia wide receiver Malik Washington as the No. 194 overall selection.
The NFL did not reveal exactly why Torres was selected to read the pick, or how the Dolphins were connected to the Spaniard.
Torres was appointed from Spain to make the selection for the Metropolitano Stadium
Torres was one of the best strikers in the world for years at Liverpool and Chelsea
Next year the NFL will play its first competition match from Spain.
However, the match will take place at the venue of Atletico Madrid’s cross-town rivals, Real Madrid, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.
As Torres read the choice, Atletico Madrid’s senior team played in the background against Athletic Bilbao.
Torres retired from football in 2019 as a World Cup champion. He also won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012.
A late goal from Torres in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona helped Chelsea progress to the final and ultimately win the tournament.
