Alcohol can be poison to a marriage, but no one tells you giving up the booze can be even worse: As Kate Moss splits from her teetotal lover, AMANDA GOFF delivers some sobering home truths
“Nothing tastes as good as lean feels.”
These are the most famous words of Kate Moss, but today she sometimes gives the impression that if you offered the supermodel the choice between a bottle of champagne or being thin, the drink would win hands down.
You’d be forgiven for wondering if Kate’s recent enthusiasm for hedonism was a reason for her breakup with toyboy partner Count Nikolai Von Bismarck. But it is rumored that Nik’s ‘teetotaler lifestyle’ contributed to the couple ‘driving apart’ after nine years.
The high-society couple has been ‘on and off’ for years, reportedly going ‘different directions in life’ and ‘at 50, Kate feels fantastic and like she wants to get back out there and have some fun in time for Christmas,” a source told The Sun.
Meanwhile, Nik longs for a “quieter life” and continues his sober journey, and they simply “have different hobbies and desires.”
It doesn’t take Einstein to guess that Kate might want to make it happen and that 37-year-old Nik is a party-pooper because he’s sober. Boring! Next!
It’s actually quite ironic. You’d think a rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle would fail a partner, not a sober one.
But here’s what many people may not realize when they put down the bottle: sobriety destroys relationships as often as alcohol does.
Kate Moss split from her aristocratic boyfriend Nikolai von Bismarck this week, with a source revealing she felt they were ‘on different journeys in life’
As she quietly celebrates six years of sobriety, Amanda Goff (left, today; right, when she was drinking) reveals three honest truths about quitting drinking
And here’s why I know: because as I write this column this week, I’m silently celebrating six years of being free from the demon potion.
That’s six birthdays, six Christmases and six New Year’s Eves with friends without a glass of bubbly in my hand. That’s also six years of healing my mind, body and soul, and six blissful years without hangovers.
I don’t want a medal. This isn’t a column about how great sobriety is; that’s for another time. This is about how hard getting sober can be for your relationships and for the people around you, told by someone who is going through it right now, me.
But of course every collaboration is unique and I’m not saying that Kate has an alcohol problem like I do, and I’m only talking about my experience when I gave up.
The couple met through Nik’s mother (and Kate’s confidante), Countess Debonnaire von Bismarck, and the chic duo ventured on their sober path together in 2018, with Kate’s boyfriend DJ Fat Tony telling friends at the time that Kate had “found her inner happiness ‘ by the drink.
Kate’s wellness brand Cosmoss was born, and by all accounts she looked like she was practicing what she preached, both on the cigarettes and on the booze, and it was the first time in decades we’d seen the infamous South London party girl shine. Her skin glowed and the sparkle returned to her enchanting brown eyes.
I don’t know what gave Kate the urge to party again. But speaking for myself, it doesn’t take much for those who are struggling. Like I said, I’m one of them.
But I was disappointed when I saw pictures of the 50-year-old fashion muse with a bottle of Gray Goose vodka hanging from her handbag during a night out with friends, in honor of her being crowned Global Ambassador to the British Beauty Council last October . .
I’m not surprised that party girl Kate no longer wants to be with sober Nik, especially if she’s jumped off the wagon.

For me, recovery wasn’t a straight line, and it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But it’s also the best thing I’ve ever done, and I recommend a detox to anyone who thinks they need it.
But before you decide to go alcohol-free, here are three sobering truths you need to know:
1) Your partner may not like the new you
You were once the life and soul of the party – and now you’re being called boring, different, self-righteous and just not fun anymore.
I’m not saying Kate said these things about Nik, but you can imagine it, right, behind the closed doors of their London mansion?
Welcome to sobriety. Your partner who once rolled his eyes—or joined you—in your drunken misbehavior is now unsure how to handle it when you’re clean and sober.
Why? There is nothing more uncomfortable than forcing someone to confront their own habits. When you stop drinking, those close to you may suddenly feel insecure about their drinking and feel like you are silently judging them.
This introspection is too painful for some to face and it is easier to end the relationship than deal with the possibility that drinking may be a problem.
After all, booze is the greatest illusion there is: people drink because it’s fun and it helps them connect with others, but the truth is that, from my point of view, it’s no longer fun for people who use alcohol as a crutch or as a tool. to use. a coping mechanism. Soon these types start drinking alone at home instead of with friends.

2) Everything becomes crystal clear in sobriety
Without alcohol clouding your mind, your bulls*** radar is fine-tuned and you have zero tolerance for fools and fakes.
The photo of Kate and Count Nik sitting away from each other at the Gucci Cruise 2025 Fashion Show recently struck me as a sign that this relationship was over.
The handsome earl looked like he was all over the A-lister scene, and looked like he was ready for bed, while Kate looked like she was ready to party. This couple didn’t evolve together, I thought. They drifted apart.
This kind of inequality can lead to the drinker sliding back into the party scene, where their choices are validated and unchallenged – unlike at home.
3) You will hardly be able to tolerate – or trust – those who drink too much
You’ve probably heard the saying, “Never trust someone who doesn’t drink.” Oh, the irony! When I was drinking, I was the least trustworthy person I knew.
Again, I’m in no way accusing Kate of being unreliable, or a drunk, but she was spotted holding hands with 27-year-old Skip Marley – grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley – after a festival in Turkey earlier this year. . while she was still in a relationship with Nik.
Alcohol blurs boundaries and makes us do things we normally wouldn’t do, causing a wave of destruction and pain for those who love us.
When you put the bottle down, the madness stops – at least for the sober person. And when you’re sober, there’s nothing more annoying than a glassy, wandering mess that can’t be trusted.
Nothing may taste as good as feeling thin, Kate, but nothing is better for your health—and your relationships—than sobriety.
From one former party girl to another, I wish you all the best.
