SNL jokes Gaza has called for a ceasefire in CHICAGO, after crime-ridden metropolis’ progressive mayor passed controversial resolution

Even Saturday Night Live is making fun of the Windy City after the progressive mayor of the crime-ridden metropolis passed a controversial resolution this week.

SNL’s Weekend Update host Michael Che joked, “Chicago became the largest U.S. city to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.”

He then followed up with the punch line: “And in return, Gaza called for a ceasefire in Chicago.”

The joke came days after Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson used his casting vote to break the tie in favor of the controversial measure, which called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza without the release of hostages.

The resolution made Chicago the largest US city so far to demand a ceasefire in the four-month war, which has cost more than 26,000 Palestinian lives.

The clip of Che’s joke quickly went viral on social media, as one X-user who shared the video said, “Even ‘left-wing’ media is making fun of Chicago.”

‘Far too often, Chicago is the punchline of a joke. Choose clowns, expect a circus. Do better, Chicago,” the user wrote.

Another user wrote: ‘Oh boy, I’m glad I moved. Please be safe.”

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters packed the building and public gallery for the sharp vote, with Johnson facing strong opponents before casting the deciding vote.

Johnson asked two senior councilors to stay away if they could not support it, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, and was criticized for using his casting vote to stoke tensions.

Councilwoman Debra Silverstein, the city council’s only Jewish member, implored colleagues not to adopt the resolution.

“There’s not even a mention of the dozens of women raped,” Silverstein told the crowd as a police officer stood nearby.

“No reference to the brutal depravity that is now burned into the psyche of every Israeli and every Jewish man, woman and child.”

Even Illinois Governor JB Pritzker denounced the mood in a city that will host the Democrat National Convention in August.

“I was disappointed that the women who were raped by Hamas fighters who crossed the border into Israel and kidnapped people were not taken into account, and that the deaths caused by those terrorists were not acknowledged,” he said.

“And the city council, if they’re going to talk about the challenge of war in the Middle East, you have to make sure you include all perspectives. They didn’t do that.’

While the mayor worked frantically behind the scenes to pass the resolution, crime has exploded across the city over the past two years.

Murders are down 13 percent this year and 20 percent in three years, but all crime is up 17 percent, especially car theft and theft.

Under Johnson’s predecessor Lori Lightfoot, crime rose from a total of 46,572 complaints to 65,421 in 2022 – although this was almost entirely driven by the huge increase in car thefts, burglaries and robberies.

And the past year has not reversed the city’s fortunes, as crime is up 64 percent from two years ago, 68 percent from three years ago and 55 percent from four years ago.

Murders and shootings have been declining for three years: both are down 13 percent this year and 20 percent from 2020, while shootings are down 25 percent over that period.

However, both are up compared to before the Covid pandemic, with homicides up 24 percent from 2019 and shootings up 15 percent.

The number of thefts has increased by 23 percent compared to last year and by 39 percent compared to 2019, while theft has been stable this year, but increased by 41 percent since 2019 and by 94 percent since 2020.

By far the biggest increase in crime was vehicle-related theft, which rose 38 percent this year and a staggering 227 percent from 2019.
