Snickers maker fined £12,000 after two employees fell into giant barrel of chocolate

The Snickers maker has been fined after two workers fell into a barrel of chocolate.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulators fined the Mars Wrigley plant in Pennsylvania more than £12,000 following an incident in June last year.

The company produces some of the world’s most popular sweet treats, including Skittles, M&Ms and Twix.

Fined: Two workers at the Mars Wrigley plant in Pennsylvania in the US fell into a tank partially filled to waist height with chocolate

Two employees found themselves in a precarious situation last summer after falling into a tank partially filled with chocolate up to waist height.

More than two dozen firefighters were called to the plant and the workers were rescued after a hole was made in the tank. Both were taken to hospital, one of them was transported by helicopter.

The individuals had been recruited to clean the tank at the Elizabethtown plant.

They received insufficient health and safety training, regulators said in a report that called the incident “serious.”

A Mars Wrigley spokesperson said: “The safety of our employees and outside contractors is a top priority. We appreciate the way regulators work with us.’
