Sloane Stephens easily reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and thanked her mother Sybil for gifting her unique athletic skills.

Stephens, who has now won 35 major draws at Roland Garros, defeated Yulia Putintseva in three sets to advance to the second week of the French Open.

Her mother was the first black female swimmer to be named a first-team Division I All-American while playing for Boston University.

And Stephens said, ‘I get my strength from my mother. She’s the most athletic person in our family!’

In 12 appearances at this tournament, she made it through the second week 10 times.

“When it’s Roland Garros, I know it’s time to play,” she added.

The American will play in the next round against second seed and Australian Open winner Aryna Sabalenka.
