Thatgamecompany, the Santa Monica-based developer behind the critically acclaimed 2012 adventure game triprevealed on Monday that it’s an open-world social adventure game Heaven: Children of the Light will be released later this year on Windows PC. The announcement coincides with the 17th anniversary of the studio’s founding.
Originally released on iOS and subsequently made playable on Android, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, the 2019 free-to-play game allows players to interact and collaborate with each other as they traverse a massive open world consisting of seven unique realms, each with a variety of areas to navigate, puzzles to explore, and items to collect and use, such as emotes, musical instruments, and more.
To put it bluntly, the game plays a lot like a spiritual successor trip, albeit with a stronger emphasis on cooperative play. “I’m trying to make something like a Pixar movie,” developer Jenova Chen told Polygon EIC Chris Plante in 2019. “Something for the family to play together. Mobile phones have two billion players, but there are only 200 million consoles. That means 9 out of 10 people haven’t used a console.”
The Windows PC version of Heaven: Children of the Light follows some of the studio’s previous games that have made the jump to PC since 2019, including those from 2009 Flower and that of 2012 trip. No release date has been confirmed at this time, although the game is currently available for wishlist on Steam.
