Couple’s nightmare as their new Skoda car ‘malfunctions’ and locks their three-month-old baby boy inside on a scorching hot day

A couple experienced every parent’s worst nightmare when their baby got stuck in their car on a sweltering 30 degree Celsius day.

Queensland couple Lewis and Sarah Cianci claim their Skoda Kodiaq ‘locked itself’ while both sets of keys were in the center console in Beenleigh on Friday afternoon.

Their three-month-old son became trapped inside and the couple had no choice but to break one of the windows to reach the screaming child.

“I got out of the car and walked over to where our baby was in the car seat, and by the time I got there the doors were locked,” Mr. Cianci said. 9News.

“It’s horrible, horrible for a parent to know that your child is stuck in the car and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

CCTV footage shows the moment a police car stops in front of the family home and two officers jump out to help the frantic couple.

“He’s in the back, behind the passenger seat,” Ms. Cianci says.

They decided to smash the driver’s side window, with shards of glass visible throughout the vehicle from the impact.

“He was crying, he was quite upset and he was feeling quite hot too,” Mr Cianci said.

The baby was freed by paramedics to the relief of his parents, but they are now too scared to put him back in the car.

A message on the car’s dashboard stated that the key was not detected, despite there being two sets of keys in the center console after a recent service.

Skoda said it had launched an investigation into the incident.

The couple has borrowed a rental car while their vehicle is checked for defects.

“Our cars lock and unlock no differently than vehicles of any brand,” Skoda said in a statement.

“We are not aware of an issue like the one described but will attempt to replicate it as part of the investigation.”

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Skoda for further comment.
