Sizzler’s iconic cheese toast returns – but Aussie fans of the savoury treat aren’t happy

Sizzler recently made a welcome return to Australia, but some customers were disappointed when the long-running franchise re-released a favourite dish.

Following the huge success of its temporary pop-up store in Brisbane earlier this month, KIIS 97.3’s Robin & Kip sought to recreate its iconic cheese toastie.

Presenters Robin Bailey and Kip Wightman teamed up with The Coffee Club to open a pop-up selling the savoury treat, but TikTok users were less than impressed with the results.

Social media account Sizzler Australia shared videos on its page last week promoting the temporary comeback of the cheese toast recipe.

But followers responded en masse to the comments on the post, expressing their disappointment with the dish, claiming it bore no resemblance to the original.

“It doesn’t taste the same. I went there quickly this morning and was very disappointed,” one person wrote.

Another said: ‘It just doesn’t look like Sizzler toast at all,’ while someone else added: ‘My cheese toast wasn’t cheesy.’

‘Was very excited and got some yesterday. Sadly I was very disappointed. It was basically just buttered toast. Didn’t even taste like there was cheese on it. So sad,’ said one.

Beloved all-you-can-eat restaurant Sizzler recently made a long-awaited comeback, reopening for one night only, four years after the previous location closed its doors.

Former staff donned their uniforms and served up iconic dishes from the restaurant’s glory days at a pop-up restaurant in Brisbane earlier this month.

The cultural icon closed its doors for good in 2020 after serving cheese toast, grilled steaks and salads for thirty years.

Since then, Sizzler fans have attempted to recreate some of the popular menu items or opted for knock-off versions of the cult cheese toast, which went viral on social media.

Fritzenberger, a popular Brisbane eatery, has also purchased an original Sizzler cheese toasting machine and is now serving the iconic dish to customers.
