Six members of two families were slaughtered at a construction site in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.
The victims, three male construction workers and a couple with their grandson, were shot dead on Tuesday in the municipality of Yuriria.
Yuriria Mayor María De Los Ángeles told Mexican news outlet Milenio that construction workers were working at the couple’s family’s building site when several gunmen arrived and opened fire.
“Unfortunately, this cowardly event is happening here in this community,” De Los Ángeles said. “It shocks the entire community, especially since among the six executed there are a minor and a woman.”
Because the shooting took place outside the city center, the mayor said no one witnessed the shooting.

Authorities were called to the scene of the murder around 6:00 p.m. local time after a local resident found the bodies next to a car.
The Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office says it is investigating the killings, but no suspects have been arrested.
Guanajuato is considered Mexico’s most dangerous state, with 1,469 murders in the first six months of 2024. However, Mayor De Los Ángeles said Yuriria had been spared until the latest massacre.
“Yuriria is calm. Yuriria is a calm municipality,” she said. “Unfortunately, yes, like the whole country, the state experiences situations of insecurity. But (in Yuriria) they are very sporadic.”

Last Friday, gunmen burst into a children’s party and executed four people, including a 10-year-old girl, in the town of Pénjamo.
On Tuesday, gunmen shot dead a mother who was walking with her two children, aged 4 and 5. The children were injured in the attack but survived.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the three killings are linked to cartel violence in a state where the Jalisco New Generation Cartel is at war with local gangs for control of the industrial and agricultural center.
According to Mexican security analyst David Saucedo, there is ongoing cartel activity in cities in southern Guanajuato, bordering the state of Michoacan.
“The attack on entire families is aimed at spreading rival cartel structures,” he said. “The idea is that they take revenge not only on their rivals, but also on their families.”
