It’s not every day a Hollywood star pops up at Camber Sands, but locals were treated to just that when a new movie was being worked on this week.

While principal photography was in full swing on East Sussex beach, Sir Michael Caine was spotted in a wheelchair as he prepared to film his scenes.

The veteran actor, 89, will star in the upcoming film The Great Escaper, based on the 2014 escape of war veteran Bernard Jordan from a British care home to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, France.

Caine will be reunited with actress Glenda Jackson, 86, as Jordan’s wife Irene, 47 years after they famously starred in director Joseph Losey’s The Romantic Englishwoman.

A synopsis for the new film reads: ‘It was a story that captured the imagination of the world – Bernie seemed to embody the defiant, ‘can-do’ spirit of a generation that was rapidly disappearing.

“But of course it wasn’t the whole story. It was the story we all tell ourselves to make war and old age bearable. The bittersweet script explores reality with humor and a very big heart.

Bernie’s adventure, which lasts only 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Jackson) – the story celebrates their love without sentimentality and in view of the lessons we can all learn from the greatest generation. ‘

BAFTA-nominated director Oliver Parker, whose film credits include An Ideal Husband, St Trinian’s and cult horror classic Hellraiser, has been brought in to lead the project.
