Sir Michael Caine, 90, is assisted by a walking frame as he heads to the beach in Barbados for some well-deserved rest after major surgery

Sir Michael Caine treated himself to a day at the beach on Easter Sunday while still recovering from back surgery last year.

The decorated actor, 90, is enjoying a holiday in the Caribbean with wife Shakira, 76, and enjoyed another sunny day relaxing on the beach.

Michael was seen making his way to a lounger using his trusty walker and an assistant before settling down to touch up his tan.

The Academy Award winner has been using a cane in public since 2018 after suffering a broken ankle from a nasty fall on the ice.

Sir Michael – who recently celebrated his 90th birthday in London – is resting after undergoing major surgery last year.

“He had back surgery quite recently,” Michael’s wife Shakira recently told the Daily Mail. “He had spinal stenosis.”

She described her husband as a “strong man” while confirming that he was doing “great” and was “recovering” after the surgery.

The Guyanese former model added: ‘The surgery was fantastic. Soon he will be able to dance again.’

Spinal stenosis is a condition that narrows the spinal canal and can cause back and leg pain. Surgery is usually recommended only when non-surgical treatments have been ineffective.

Earlier this year, Michael explained, “I have a spinal problem that affects my leg, so I can’t walk very well.”

In October 2021, Michael announced that he would likely retire from acting, describing his film Best Sellers with Aubrey Plaza as ‘my last role, really’.

Noting that he has limited mobility, he added, “Scripts aren’t exactly pouring in for an 88-year-old protagonist, you know?”

But it seems that the actor has yet to star in other projects as he is about to take part in the Czech action-historical drama film Medieval while it is believed that he will reprise his role as Arthur Tressler in Now You See Me 3 .

Sir Michael began acting in 1953 when he took a job with a repertory company in West Sussex.

He said: ‘I haven’t worked for two years and I have a spinal problem that affects my legs, so I can’t walk very well’.

He further pointed to the memoirs he has published in recent years – The Elephant In Hollywood in 2010 and Blowing The Bloody Doors Off in 2018.

“And I also wrote a book, a few books that were published and were successful, so I’m not an actor now — I’m a writer,” he said.
