Sir Bobby Charlton’s England shirt from the 1966 World Cup semi-final has been bought at auction for £59,000.
The jumper went on sale at 9.30am this morning and was snapped up for a hammer price of £45,000, but the buyer’s premium took it to £59,040, Hansons Auctioneers told MailOnline.
Charlton scored two goals in front of 94,000 fans at Wembley against Portugal and sealed England’s passage to the World Cup final with a 2-1 win in the iconic kit.
England won the tournament and their only World Cup to date with a 4–2 victory over West Germany in the final.
The shirt was sold by Derbyshire-based Hansons Auctioneers and had an initial guide price of £50,000 – £80,000.

A minute’s silence was held during the auction to celebrate the greatness of one of football’s greatest players.
Sir Bobby originally donated the shirt to a charity auction after the 1966 World Cup and personally signed it to the successful bidder.
In 2000 it was bought for £9,200 at an auction in London, where the estimate was between £10,000 and £15,000.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, which sold the kit, said: ‘Memories of England’s 1966 World Cup victory will never leave us. We are a proud footballing nation and Sir Bobby was part of the unforgettable team that achieved ultimate glory. His 1966 World Cup shirt is extremely important football memorabilia.’
Charlton died on October 21 at the age of 86 and his funeral was on Monday.
Thousands of people came out to say their goodbyes, with Prince William, Sir Alex Ferguson and Gareth Southgate attending the ceremony.
United legends Paul Scholes, Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole attended the afternoon meeting, as well as current team members.
Shortly after 1.30pm Sir Bobby passed Old Trafford for the final time and fans along Sir Matt Busby Way erupted in soft applause as the hearse carrying his coffin passed by.
