Sir Alex Ferguson and his racing club made history on Monday when they paid a record price for a National Hunt horse sold at public auction.

The former Manchester United manager, along with John Hales, with whom he co-owns Protektorat, and ten others, paid £660,000 for the gelding Regent’s Stroll at Goffs in Doncaster.

Regent’s Stroll, a promising hurdler, continues to train with Paul Nicholls.

Sir Alex previously held the record for the most expensive showjumping horse ever sold at public auction when Caldwell Potter was bought for £634,000 in February.

And he and his friends took it a step further when they spent money on Regent’s Stroll, which is 2-2 in bumpers.

The horse, who is related to former Gold Cup winner Denman, has never jumped a fence in public.

He won the bumper race at Ascot last November and dominated the bumper race at Newbury in his last race in March.

Charlie Davies, Paul Nicholls’ assistant, said after the race: ‘You couldn’t be more impressed by that.’

Bloodstock agent Tom Malone and legendary trainer Nicholls were the men who bid on behalf of Sir Alex and co. at the auction.

Multimillionaire Ged Mason and toy entrepreneur John Hales were also financially involved, as were Neil and Alfie Smith.

Bidding started at £400,000 and went up in increments to £20,000 at a time. Nicholls said he had never been so nervous at an auction.
