The entire month of January is 'peak dating season' on dating apps, with a whopping 11.4 million more messages sent globally on Tinder from January 1 to February 14 compared to the rest of the year.

During this period, it seems that many singles are also taking the opportunity to refresh their profiles, with 2,263 photos being added every minute.

The ultimate wave comes on the first Sunday in January, also known as 'Dating Sunday'.

Data from Tinder shows that users today respond an average of 19.4 minutes faster than on other Sundays of the year.

The news is likely to be welcomed by many singles, who have expressed their interest in dating this new year.

And one joked: 'My New Year's resolution is to start dating again, but I've said that for the last two new years and haven't done it, so let's see how long this lasts.'

If you're hoping to get your Tinder profile into shape, Tinder's Global Relationship Insights Expert, Paul C. Brunson, has five top tips.

1. Show the real you

Mr. Brunson recommends having at least five photos that capture your true personality in different scenarios.

“People want to see you for who you are and authenticity is especially important for young singles,” he said.

2. More words, more possibilities

According to Tinder, the optimal number of words in a Tinder bio is between 15 and 45.

'Making these 15-45 word counts is important because research from Tinder shows that more than two in five (45%) of single 18-24 year olds prefer it if their potential match is obvious about what they want in their dating app bio. Brunson said.

3. Highlight your interests

By highlighting your interests, potential matches can quickly find common ground with you.

“Your interests are what make you you and by sharing these you are more likely to meet people who match your energy,” Mr Brunson advised.

4. Express your personality

Instead of a general “Hey, how are you?” to send, Mr. Brunson suggests being creative and personal with your messages.

'Ask questions you really want to know the answers to, or light the spark by asking your match their favorite place to rave, or the name of their pet. You never know what you'll learn…” he said.

5. Be open about what you are looking for

Finally, Mr. Brunson advises being clear about your intentions from the start.

“Being clear and honest about what you expect from a competition goes a long way,” he concluded.

HOW DID ONLINE DATING BECOME SO POPULAR?

The very first incarnation of a dating app dates back to 1995, when Match.com first launched.

The website allowed singles to upload a profile and a photo and chat with people online.

The app was intended to allow people looking for long-term relationships to meet each other.

eHarmony was developed in 2000 and two years later, Ashley Madison, a site dedicated to infidelity and cheating, was first launched.

Over the next 10-15 years, a plethora of other dating sites with unique target groups were set up, including: OKCupid (2004), Plenty of Fish (2006), Grindr (2009), and Happn (2013).

Launched in 2012, Tinder was the first swipe-based dating platform.

After the initial launch, usage snowballed and by March 2014 there were one billion matches per day worldwide.

In 2014, Tinder co-founder Whitney Wolfe Herd launched Bumble, a dating app that empowered women by only allowing women to send the first message.

The popularity of mobile dating apps such as Tinder, Badoo and more recently Bumble is due to a growing number of younger users with busy schedules.

In the 1990s, there was a stigma attached to online dating as it was considered a last-ditch effort to find love.

This belief has disappeared and now about a third of marriages take place between couples who met online.

A 2014 study found that 84 percent of dating app users used online dating services to look for a romantic relationship.

Twenty-four percent indicate that they use online dating apps explicitly for sexual encounters.
