Singapore, China Navies Conduct Bilateral Exercise

Besides bilateral exercises, the two armed forces also cooperate regularly through high-level exchanges, mutual visits and attending training courses, the report said in the ministry statement.

The navies of Singapore and China on Sunday began the third edition of a bilateral maritime exercise, underscoring the “long-standing, warm and friendly” defence ties between the two countries, an official statement said.

The Maritime Cooperation exercise will be conducted by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) from September 1 to 5, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

The opening ceremony was held on Sunday at the Ma Xie Naval Base in Zhanjiang, China, attended by about 200 personnel from both navies, The Straits Times newspaper reported.

This is the third edition of the maritime exercise since its launch in 2015.

The exercise underscores the “long-standing, warm and friendly bilateral defense relationship between the two countries,” the statement said.

Singapore’s Formidable-class frigate RSS Stalwart is participating in the exercise. It will observe the PLA Navy ships performing various tasks, such as boarding ships and mine clearance, the report said.

RSN Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Kwan Hon Chuong said the exercise is a testament to the strong and friendly defence relationship between the two countries.

This exercise has repeatedly provided our navies with valuable opportunities to learn from each other, build mutual trust and understanding, and form friendships, the commander said in the report.

In an earlier statement on August 29, the ministry said personnel from both navies would conduct exercises such as firing cannons, landing helicopters on the deck and familiarizing themselves with voice procedures for simulated shots.

In addition to bilateral exercises, the two armed forces also cooperate regularly through high-level exchanges, mutual visits and attendance at training courses, the report cited the ministry’s statement.
