Simone Biles refuses to be downbeat despite disappointing end to Paris Olympics: ‘I’ve accomplished way more than my wildest dreams’

Simone Biles did not leave the Paris Olympics in the dominant fashion one might expect from the 27-year-old.

A fall on the balance beam and an injury during a floor exercise warm-up meant Biles won only one silver medal in each event.

Still, Biles was not depressed when her third Olympiad came to an end.

“I’ve accomplished far beyond my wildest dreams, not only in these Olympics, but in sports,” Biles said. “So I can’t be mad at my accomplishments. A few years ago, I wouldn’t have thought I’d be back here at the Olympics.”

“So to compete and walk away with four medals, I’m not mad about that. I’m pretty proud of myself and it’s always so exciting to compete,” Biles continued.

Biles won three gold medals in Paris in the team disciplines, the all-round discipline and the jump.

What would be a great achievement for most other athletes might be a reason for them to think the glass is half empty.

“It obviously wasn’t my best performance, but whoever won a medal won a medal,” Biles said.

“And that’s what’s exciting, because with gymnastics, you never know,” Biles added. “So I’m not really upset or anything about my performance at the Olympics. I’m actually really happy, proud and even more excited that it’s over.”

Biles made a mistake on the floor exercise, leaving her just 0.033 points behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, who won gold.

Alongside American teammate Jordan Chiles, who took bronze on the floor exercise, the trio took a photo on the podium with the pair of Americans bowed to the Brazilian.

“Rebeca, she’s so amazing — she’s the queen,” Biles said. “And at first it was an all-black stage, so that was super exciting for us. But then Jordan said, ‘Should we bow down to her?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ … It was just the right thing to do.”
