Responding to a tweet from a fan that read, “My daughter heard Simone Biles retired today and she has literally been crying for the past hour,” Simone wrote, “I’m not retired though, I’m just working on my mental health.’
Simone stunned the world in 2021 when she suddenly withdrew from several events at the Tokyo Olympics – she later revealed she struggled with mental health issues that forced her to withdraw from team competition, as well as multiple individual finals.
She had arrived expecting to match or even surpass the historic four gold medals she won in Rio in 2016, but upon her arrival in Japan, she began to suffer from a mental block known as the “twisties,” a phenomenon that temporarily impairs the athlete’s spatial awareness and can lead to serious injury.
Daily medical evaluations and two sessions with Team USA’s sports psychologist led to Simone being withdrawn from her finals until she was finally cleared for the balance beam final.
She took a bronze medal in beam, along with her team competition silver.
