Shrek 5 really happened
Rumors of a fifth Shrek film have been swirling for years, but now it’s official — and it has a release date. DreamWorks released a little teaser for Smash Mouth’s “All Star,” announcing that Shrek and company will return on July 1, 2026.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz have all been confirmed to reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Apparently, Murphy had previously hinted That Shrek5 happened back in June, but this is the first official confirmation. Murphy Also let it be known that a Donkey spin-off is coming. And hey, if it’s even remotely as good as Puss in Boots: The Last Wishand then the Donkey movie. (It has not yet been confirmed whether Antonio Banderas, the voice of Puss, will return for Shrek 5.)
The first Shrek film came out in 2001 and fundamentally changed the landscape of American animation. It wasn’t just the then-groundbreaking CG animation; Shrek smashed fairy tale archetypes with a satirical wink-wink nudge-nudge style and embraced crude humor. It became a staple of American animation for the next decade or so.
Four films, two spin-offs, an amusement park land and So Many memes later, Shrek’s legacy is still going strong! And yes, I may have come up with a theory that Shrek is dead in Puss in Boots: The Last Wishbut hey! who says Shrek5 does not happen for it in the timeline? The original Puss in Boots used to be a prequel after all. The last time we saw Shrek in his own movie was 14 years ago, when he was raising baby triplets. Which means that father Shrek raising teenage ogres is a strong contender for the plot of Shrek5I personally would like to see it.
