In Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you meet He Who Was, a Drow who longs to punish a dead woman named Madeline. Madeline is said to have committed heinous acts at a nearby tavern, and He Who Was is looking for evidence to justify his revenge. This will start the search”Punish the wicked‘, which requires you to search for the inn’s ledger and decide whether to punish or forgive Madeline’s misdeeds.
Search location ‘Punish the Wicked’
“Punish the Wicked” can be started by talking to He Who Was, which can be found east of the Last Light Inn and camp in the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
Madeline’s Ledger location
Madeline’s Ledger can be found in the “The Waning Moon” under some loose planks near the Rat Bat, but you have to pass a Perception Check to see the loose planks. Be careful before entering as you will meet Thisobald Thorm at the bar. You’ll need to pass Charisma Checks on a high difficulty or defeat Thisobald Thorm to search the inside of The Waning Moon.
What happens when you tell Madeline to stab herself?
After choosing this option, you must pass a Charisma Check with a difficulty of 14. If you pass, you can:
- Tell Madeline to go through with the stabbing
- Stop Madeline as she showed determination, which will lead to a fight with He Who Was
If Madeline started stabbing herself, you can:
- Tell her to stab herself, which will lead to a fight with He Who Was
- Stop Madeline and receive Raven Gloveswhich allows you to summon a raven
If you fail the Charisma Check, he who was will be glad you punished her, but hoped you would punish her a little more. He gives you the Raven Gloves and some gold as a reward.
What happens if you call Madeline a coward?
Calling Madeline a coward requires you to pass a Charisma check with a difficulty of 10. Whether you pass or fail, He Who Was will be glad you made her despondent and give you the Raven Gloves and some gold . as reward.
What happens when you forgive Madeline?
To forgive Madeline, you must pass a Charisma Check with a difficulty of 10. If you pass, Madeline won’t forgive herself, but the burden of guilt will feel much lighter. Once He Who Was returns to his body, he absolutely hates your decision because he wanted revenge, and immediately starts the battle with your party. The rewards for this route includes the loot from his body, including one remark that ordered He Who Was to return to Shadowfell, as well as a few alchemical materials.
If you fail, He Who Was will be satisfied with Madeline’s guilt and provide you with the Raven Gloves and some gold as a reward.
